A discovery to cement my place in history
Sunrise delivered a fool’s optimism
Exploring a cyclopean city
Immense pillars of crumbling sandstone
Meticulous thought in street design
Around a central foreboding monolith
A civilization’s astonishing potential,
Which seemed to abruptly vanish into obscurity
With sites to survey our team separated
Finally free to claim my destined glory
While examining a fading mural,
Depicting sinister creatures
Suddenly, unsettling bellows echoed throughout distance
Anxious, I departed for the rendezvous
Instead of finding concerned colleagues
I found their bloodied corpses forming a nauseating pile
In the darkness reflective eyes exhibited malicious intent
Adrenaline and instinct grabbed hold, I fled for my life
Chasing me till, cornered in that room which reeked of death
An idea born of madness, fashion a disguise from the diseased
Pulled and tore their flesh apart to conceal
Desecrating their bodies, my salvation
Hoping my transgressions effective, I waited and prayed
To my horror the beasts converged
Ravenous glances in my direction
A ferocious frenzy, feast on piled flesh
Ripping appendages and ligament away
Pseudo safe-haven revealed
My fate was sealed
